A Look at Laikipia County’s Economic Growth since 2013

Laikipia County has recorded an improvement in its economy since 2013, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

Laikipia county statistical abstract shows that Laikipia’s Gross County Products by 2017 stood at about 81 billion shillings which was an improvement from 2013’s 38.2 billion.

The improvement in gross county products translates to a 1.1 percent contribution to the country’s GDP in 2017 against 2013’s 0.9 percent.

Agriculture was reported to have been the county’s main contributor to the Gross County Product as it brought in 35 billion shillings, translating to 44 percent of the total County Domestic Product (CDP).

Wholesale and retail business brought in 7.132 billion shillings in 2017, an improvement from the 4.3 billion in 2013.

Financial and insurance activities come in at the third position as it generated a Gross County Product (GCP) of 6.275 billion by 2017. Transport and storage generated a GCP of 5.904 billion in 2017, up from 3.17 billion in 2013.

The County governor, Ndiritu Muriithi during the Launch of Laikipia County Statistical Abstract said that the data collection will help county departments to achieve their set goals and in supporting public support modernization by enabling staff to gauge their performance.

Statistics from KNBS have revealed that most economic activities have tremendously grown while others have shown average growth.

The governor says that his government aims to use areas with significant economic potential to allocate resources as the statistics will help them understand the county’s economy and social economic progress of its people better.

Solio water project

Laikipia County Government also seeks to better its peoples lives through the Solio water project.

This will see at least 20,000 people, seven primary schools, 2 secondary schools,2 health centers and livestock in Mathingira and Furaha Locations have access to clean water.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.

Life expectancy

Laikipia County’s improvement in the economy has seen it ranked as the county with the highest life expectancy of 71.9 years as compared to 67 years expectancy nationally.

In terms of child mortality rate, Laikipia county was ranked the second lowest.
