Energy Management Awards to Recognize Best Practice in Energy Efficiency

The Kenya Association of Manufacturers through the Center for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (CEEC) willnext week Friday hold the 2016 Energy Management Awards  (EMA).

The EMA awards will be the 12th since it was inaugurated to recognize best practice in energy efficiency, creating awareness, reducing the cost of doing business in Kenya, increasing competitiveness in Kenyan enterprises, contributing to the country’s economic development and  contributing to reduction of harmful emissions to the environment that arise out of generation and use of energy.

EMA recognizes enterprises that have made major and sustainable gains in energy efficiency through the application of modern energy management principles and practices, and in the process made significant energy and cost reductions.

In 2015 the event saw 50 companies from the manufacturing and service sectors participate.

This year the number of participants is projected to be higher with enterprises becoming aware of the benefits of energy efficiency and the mileage they gain from the recognition.

The awards criteria are based on assessment of the enterprises energy management policy strategies and results achieved between January 2015 and December 2015.

Participation is open to all industrial, commercial and institutional enterprises with significant energy consumption where they have to demonstrate a commitment to improved energy utilization in their operations, as evidenced by their management initiatives and results achieved.

The categories this year includes

  • The Overall Energy Management Award
  • Best Energy Management Team Award
  • Fuel Savings Award-
  • Electricity Savings Award
  • Service Sector Award
  • Energy Innovation Award
  • Sustained High Performance Award
  • Best New Entrant –SME /Large
  • Innovation Category
  • Students Category
  • The Sustainable Buildings category
  • The technical Committee category for best presentation of documents

According to KAM, the manufacturing industry consumes about 60 per cent of the energy produced in the country and it takes up to 30 per cent of the production cost and is therefore a critical area to look at when it comes to mitigation of high production cost.

EMA provides a good networking platform for the members to share the good practices in energy management.

KAM has partnered with Government to champion the promotion of energy management and energy efficiency initiatives.
