Why the Economy Has Worsened in the Villages

BY · October 21, 2015 11:10 am

Anyone with a keen eye can clearly see that Small Medium Enterprises are not performing well in the villages for a while now partly because of the teachers’ strike that lasted for over a month.

The truth is that teachers in the villages are very important people and a key driver of the economy in those areas because they are the major consumers of goods. In fact, in most villages in Kenya, teachers are more famous than the local village elder, simply because they always have some cash at the end of every month.

Teachers have always facilitated the flow of cash into the villages especially after earning their salary but at the moment things are not the way they used to be. Small businesses were greatly affected and they are still being affected because the teachers are yet to be paid. Mama Mbogas who depend on teachers for survival are crying, those who sell goods in canteens are counting losses. And this chain moves all the way to the top chain of business because if those retailers won’t get customers, they won’t buy from suppliers and the suppliers won’t buy from the manufacturers.
