Co-operative Bank of Kenya

History
The Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited is incorporated in Kenya under the Company Act and is also licensed to do the business of banking under the Banking Act. The Bank was initially registered under the Co-operative Societies Act at the point of founding in 1965. This status was retained up to and until June 27th 2008 when the Bank’s Special General Meeting resolved to incorporate under the Companies Act with a view to complying with the requirements for listing on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE).
The Bank went public and was listed on December 22nd 2008.
Shares previously held by the 3,805 Co-operatives Societies and unions were ring-fenced under Coop Holdings Co-operative Society Limited which became the strategic investor in the Bank with a 64.56% stake.
The Bank runs three subsidiary companies, namely:
- Kingdom Securities Limited, a stockbroking firm with the bank holding a controlling 60% stake;
- Co-op Trust Investment Services Limited, the fund management subsidiary wholly-owned by the bank; and
- Co-op Consultancy & Insurance Agency Limited (CCIA), the corporate finance, financial advisory and capacity-building subsidiary wholly-owned by the bank.

Shareholding Structure
The Co-operative Bank is owned by over 154,942 shareholders (as at 2011 close). Out of this, Coop Holdings Co-operative Society Limited owns 64.56%, with the rest held by other investors.
The Bank has an Authorized share capital of Kes 5,000,000,000 made up of 5,000,000,000 shares of Kes 1.00 each, and an Issued and fully paid capital of Kes 3,492,370,900 made up of 3,492,370,900 shares of Kes 1.00 each.
Staff Complement
As at 2015, Co-op Bank had a staff establishment of 3,925 employees.
Insurance
The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has come together with CIC Insurance to provide insurance services to Kenyans across the country. This partnership immediately provides you with a one-stop shop for both Banking & Insurance. Where there’s a Co-operative Bank branch, there will be CIC Insurance and you will enable you to enjoy the following products:
Motor Insurance
This offers your vehicle protection against accidents, theft or fire. It also covers third party liabilities.
Fire and Perils Insurance
Should you be a land or property owner, this policy offers protection over your office equipment and stocks against fire, theft, social unrest and the forces of nature. The cover can be extended to cover political violence and terrorism. The premium rate is as low as 0.125%.
Burglary Insurance
Should you own a shop or store, this cover stocks used in trade and office equipment such as furniture fixtures and fittings against theft. The premium is as low as 0.5%.
Domestic Insurance
Whether you are a homeowner or pay rent, this package offers protection against loss or damage to personal belongings against fire, theft, social unrest and the forces of nature. It also offers personal liability to third parties by the insured, workmen’s compensation to domestic staff and golfer’s liability.
Biashara Salama
This covers declared stocks and business tools against the risk of fire, lightning, burglary, social unrest, and water damage following fire breakout. This can be extended to provide personal accident cover for the entrepreneur and his/her family to cover accidental death, permanent total disability, and hospital costs at a fee. The policy can also be extended to include Group Funeral Expenses (GFE) with a limit of Ksh.20,000/= at an annual premium of Ksh.400/=
Personal Accident Insurance
Should something befall you in the goings of your day-to-day life, this cover will provide monetary payments in the event that you sustain injuries leading to death, permanent/total disability, temporary/total disability, medical expenses, funeral expenses, professional trauma counseling and physiotherapy expenses.
