The Kenyan government has maintained its commitment to end Malaria in the pamoja tumalize malaria Kenya campaign as the world prepares to mark the World Malaria Day on 25th of April.

This was said in an event organized by Mortein Doom in conjunction with other stake holders including the Ministry of Health in Nairobi.

In his speech, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Cleopa Mailu said that malaria remains one of the major causes of both illness and death. To address these challenges, he noted that the Ministry of Health has prioritized malaria elimination as one of the key milestones to achieve.

He said that over the next five years, Kenya has made tremendous progress against malaria. This progress is as a result of the sound policies, evidence based strategies as well as strong partnerships.

“It is gratifying to note that malaria control strategies have led to the reduction in malaria prevalence to 8 percent from11 percent five years ago. This has led the overall reduction in infant and child mortality rates,” he said.

One of the key pillars of malaria control strategy according to Dr. Mailu is prevention through the various interventions. In 2015 for instance, the Ministry distributed over 12.6 million mosquito nets to over 4.5 million households in 22 endemic as well as highland epidemic prone counties with the aim of achieving a universal coverage which is one net for every two persons at risk. This distribution targeted to protect over 24 million people.

On Tuesday, Mortein Doom renewed its partnership with Mbagathi Hospital in the fight against malaria in ensuring that the mortality rate among children under the age of five as well as mothers is significantly reduced.

Mortein Doom delivered spray cans to the hospital and distributed some to the mothers who were present at the time of the partnership. World Malaria Day in Kenya will be held in Kwale County on 25th of April.
