Dry Maize Prices Higher During Harvest Season in Eldoret and Kitale

A 90-kilogram bag of finger millet was retailing highest in Isiolo, at 9,000 shillings and lowest in Kitale where it was being sold at 4,500 shillings, leading to a difference of 4,500 between the highest and the lowest market price.

The market price for dry maize on the other hand seems to have gone up, despite the fact that this is the harvesting season in the high producing areas like Eldoret and Kitale. A 90-kilogram bag was retailing at 2,500 shillings in both town, up by 200 shillings, while the same quantity was being sold at 1,500 shillings in Imenti.

The legume family of commodities too has a number of varied market prices and Njahi takes lead with much higher market prices as compared to the others. This is because in Isiolo, a 90-kilogram bag of Njahi was retailing at 15,750 shillings, 12,600 shillings in Kitale and 9,000 shillings in Nakuru and Imenti respectively.

Mwitemania beans on the other hand was retailing as follows for a 90-kilogram bag across the country: 9,900 shillings in Eldoret, 7,200 shillings in Isiolo, 7,000 shillings in Mombasa, 5,800 shillings in Nairobi and 5,000 shillings in Kitale.
