The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has been accused of selling maize that is unfit for human consumption by the Samburu County Government.

This comes after the County Government of Samburu bought 8,000 bags of maize costing them a total of 11.2 million shillings for the purpose of distributing to the famine stricken residents across the county. The maize after undergoing tests, were declared unfit for human consumption as the results showed that it was below the minimum required consumption standards.

The Governor of Samburu County, Mr. Moses Lenolkulal condemned the board stating that they might have delivered the unfit maize to them knowingly, adding that they need to be held accountable of their actions.

Lenolkulal called on the board to go ahead and destroy the bad consignment instead of selling it to innocent customers as they had done to the county. The County has been forced to purchased 5,000 more bags of maize from Nakuru so as to supply to the people.

According to the National Drought Management Authority, more than 54,000 residents from Samburu East and North face severe hunger with the number increasing by the day. Residents of the county are relying on relief food from the government for survival.

In June, the Board was reported to be holding 400,000 bags of maize worth nearly Sh1 billion said to be unfit for human consumption. It was disclosed that the unfit maize had been lying in their stores for more than two years.
