NTSA Set to Launch Smart Driving Licenses to Curb Traffic Offenses

The National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) is set to launch smart driving licenses in a bid to curb traffic offenses and weed out rogue drivers on Kenyan roads.

NTSA had announced earlier this year that 100,000 smart driving licenses would be produced and distributed to motorists.

The new driving licenses will contain the same layout with the Kenyan Identification Card, containing important information of the driver: blood group, NTSA logo and a microchip.

Further,  the card will be charged with merit or demerits depending on the driver’s record. The migration is meant to take three years and anyone renewing the old license will instead be given the new smart license.

In March 2017, NTSA signed a 2.1 billion shillings’ contract with the National Bank of Kenya for the manufacture, formulation, and distribution of the smart driving licenses in a move aimed at revolutionizing traffic laws enforcement.
