The Ministry of Mining is set to host the second edition of the annual premium Kenya Mining Forum that will take place on 4th and 5th December 2017.
“The Ministry is glad that the government has recognized mining and extractives among key growth sectors for value addition and job creation over the next five years. Currently, the annual total value of minerals extracted stands at twenty five billion shillings (KES.25 Billion), excluding construction minerals that are classified as minerals under the newly enacted Mining Act of 2016”, said Mining Cabinet Secretary Hon. Dan Kazungu.
Since 2016’s Mining Forum, Kenya has jumped sixteen 16 positions in the world’s most attractive mining investment destinations ranking globally from position 102 to 86, according to a 2017 survey released by Fraser Institute. This has been attributed to the six (6) key pillars of Kenya’s Mining reform agenda that are driving transformation. They are; the 20-year Mining strategy and roadmap, Mining and minerals policy, Mining Act 2016, comprehensive and progressive Mining Regulations, robust competitive and attractive fiscal policy and current GeoData.
“These reforms have resulted in the operationalization of the online mining cadastre, which enables a transparent online application of mining licenses, implementation of the Mining Act 2016 which has seen 14 Mining regulations effected ushering in a new dawn for a modern and forward-looking mining sector in the country. Other reforms include the establishment of institutions and processes such as the Mineral Rights Board (MRB) to fasten the mineral license application process, Mining Laboratory, set up of the Mineral Audit Unit (MAU) to quantify and calculate revenues from mineral wealth, the set-up of the Mineral Value Addition Centre and National Mining Institute in Voi – Taita Taveta County”, added Kazungu.
The theme for the Kenya Mining Forum this year is, “Harambee: Establishing a world-class mining hub in East Africa.” The Forum 2017 will compromise of a series of activities including; a strategic two-day conference, business to business (B2B) meetings, minerals and mining equipment exhibitions, free technical workshops, CEO roundtables and expert opinion among others.
