Lost Hope Restored: SportPesa Back to Sponsoring Sports in Kenya

The Kenyan football which had started limping after the exit of their greatest sponsor, the giant gaming company, SportPesa, has a new leaf to hang on and resurrect after the company agreed to start sponsoring some of the football teams once more.

In a new partnership agreement signed on Monday, SportPesa is back as the main sponsor of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards as well as the main sponsor of Kenya Premier League. The league will now be known as SportPesa Premier League.

The gaming firm will channel a total of 682.4 million shillings into supporting the teams as well as improving the standards of the football in the country.

Under the three-year partnership signed between SportPesa and Football Kenya Federation (FKF), a total of 69.4 million shillings will go to the federation.

During the three-year period, Gor Mahia will receive 198,607,000 shillings, Kenya Premier League will get 259,712,000 while AFC Leopard will pocket 156,406,403 shillings.

The shirts of both teams, Gor and AFC will also be required to feature SportPesa’s brand as part of the sponsorship agreement.

The current sponsorship is, however, lower than the previous one where Gor enjoyed 200 million shillings for a period of five years with AFC Leopards receiving 225 million shillings for the five-year period.

SportPesa had withdrawn the sponsorship of the local teams after the government effected the 35 percent tax on the income of all betting firms. During the week, the National Treasury yielded to pressure and decided to revise the tax from 35 percent to 15 percent awaiting the approval of the parliament.

“We are extremely excited to be able to partner with these 4 powerful industry players. As we have always maintained, developing local football is a key vision for our company,” said Mr. Ronald Karauri, the CEO of SportPesa.
