Chicken farming if done well can be a lucrative venture. Local poultry keeping in Kenya is currently not enough to satisfy the demand of poultry products in the market. The business has become one of the finest chances of making a decent amount of money over a short timeframe.

The rise of key restaurants and hotels even makes it better for this kind of business. There is never a deficiency of poultry demand, even besides restaurants and eateries, Kenyans themselves consider chicken meat and eggs to be an important part of their diet.

Chicken farmers who have been smart enough are reaping big this festive season since this is one month that Chicken business will do not need any sort of market to be able to get customers.

There are three main types of chicken. The pullets popularly known as Layers are reared for egg production and most lucrative. The Broiler Chicken is reared for meat production. They grow very faster and are ready for sale at 12 weeks from the hatch. The third is the cockerel that is reared for meat. They are reliable in terms of survival and withstanding bad weathers, are more resilient, and can absorb shocks far better than Layers and Broilers.

Depending on the type of chicken, the prices are good and profitable. Currently, a sizable hen retails at an average price of between 600 and 800 shillings and the prices are expected to slightly increase as during and after Christmas and might hit 1200 shillings while a sizeable cock is going at an average market price of between 1000 and 1,200 shillings.

Many people from urban centers have traveled to rural areas. Local breeds, commonly known as kienyeji are on high demand. Many people prefer kienyeji due to their ‘natural sweetness’ which some call ‘originality.’ Do you have chicken? Make some money today, January is coming.
