Nairobi Ranked 3rd Most Bicycle-Friendly City in Africa

Nairobi has been ranked the 3rd safest city to cycle in Africa in the Bicycle Cities Index 2019.

The city was ranked 3rd after Johannesburg in Africa and 78th globally with a 24.16 percent safety score out of a possible 100 percent.

Cairo, Egypt was ranked first, and 75th globally with a 25.28 percent score out of a possible 100 percent score while Johannesburg, South Africa came in second in Africa and 77th globally with a 24.68 percent score.

Dutch City of Utrecht the World’s Most Bicycle-Friendly City

The City of Utrecht in Netherlands was ranked the safest city in the world for cyclers having earned a 77.84 percent safety score.

The study, which was conducted by digital insurance company Coya, covered the conditions for cycling in 90 cities across the globe. Research was based across six main categories: weather, bicycle usage, crime & safety, infrastructure, sharing, and events.

The city of Utrecht has an extensive network of cycling paths and a large bicycle parking station is located near the Central Railway System. About 33 percent of the journeys made within the city are by bicycle.

Eight of the top 10 bicycle-friendly cities as ranked by the Coya Bicycle Cities Index 2019 are located in Europe.

Two of the top 10 cities are located in the Netherlands (Utrecht and Amsterdam) and two are in Germany (Münster and Bremen).

The other cities are Antwerp in Belgium, Copenhagen in Denmark, Malmö in Sweden, and Bern in Switzerland.

Auckland in New Zealand (7th, 55.38 percent) and Hangzhou in China (8th, 52.55 percent) are the only two cities in the top 10 outside of Europe.

Only three US cities ranked in the top 50: San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle.
