The Kenyan government has announced plans to build youth empowerment centers in every sub-county across the country with 21 centers already in operation.

Attending the International Youth Day Celebrations, President Uhuru Kenyatta said that at least 80 youth empowerment centers will be completed by the end of 2019 and be in full function.

President Kenyatta said that the Youth Empowerment Centers will provide multipurpose functions as the youths will be able to acquire skills from these centers while at the same time access key services.

“We expect each and every Young Person in the country to be able to utilize the services available within these centers to access online opportunities, acquire new skills and competencies.  Furthermore, the services provided in these centers will enable the youth to build collaborative networks with like-minded enterprising youth in Kenya and internationally, receive training and mentorship, to mention, but a few,” President Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta also urged the youth to take full advantage of several initiatives in the country such as the MbeleNaBiz initiative and the Young Africa Works Programme that will help them grow financially.

“I encourage all youth with entrepreneurial talent to take advantage and utilize these and other similar Government initiatives, to prosper,” Kenyatta said.

According to the president, education is seen to play a vital role in creating platforms upon which the youth explore and develop their skills and talents, acquire knowledge and competencies for a lifetime.

“To that end, Kenya has emerged as a continental leader in the deployment of empowering youth education. We lead Africa in primary-to-secondary school transition rates having realized 100 percent transition last year,” he said.

This year’s celebrations were hosted by the county government of Kwale for a period of one week. The main theme was “transforming education.” In Kenya, it has been domesticated in Kenya as “Boresha Elimu, Wezesha Vijana”.
