Daima factory, owned by Sameer and known for the production of Saima milk is one of the companies that have faced the wrath of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) with an indefinite closure.

Located in Industrial area where NEMA was doing an inspection on 27th August 2019 after an expose was aired on a local television revealing how companies in Nairobi’s industrial area were polluting the Nairobi.

The early morning raid on the 27th August left a total of nine companies closed following accusations of directing harmful waste material to Nairobi River.

Daima factory was ordered closed indefinitely after NEMA officials established that the company discharged its waste into Nairobi River and had no sign of waste management solutions.

“Nema has identified 102 discharge points along Nairobi River. Out of inspections conducted, 50 percent of firms have complied. Ongoing inspections are to ensure remaining have complied as per Water Quality Regulation 2006 or be shut and prosecuted,” NEMA acting Director-General Mamo B. Mamo said.

NEMA, in its continued effort to clean up the Nairobi River, shut down four companies in Nairobi’s Industrial Area ON THE 24th of August for discharging life-threatening waste into the Nairobi River.

Modern Lithographic (K) Ltd, Apex Limited, Thorlite Kenya Ltd, and Kamongo Paper Recycling Company are some of the companies closed down in the recent crackdown of companies discharging waste into the Nairobi River.

Authorities have in the past been lagging behind on their mandate and only acting up after rot in various industries has been exposed by the media.

The Nairobi County government has in recent times been carrying out the cleanup exercise on the Nairobi River and it is unfortunate that even as the youth struggle through the waste in efforts to bring back life into the river affluent companies are busy discharging their waste into the same rivers.
