You may need to be more careful now when buying second-hand electronic devices as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a warning on buying gadgets from dealers without a fixed physical address.

According to the DCI, gadget dealers should sell their items in identifiable trading premises conspicuously displayed and complete with all approvals including government permits and licenses.

If you have been buying already used items such as mobile phones, laptops, and TV sets, you may need to stop or get a receipt which itemizes clearly the particulars of the gadget bought.

In a social media post, the DCI said it is risky and dangerous for people to purchase electronic items from unregistered dealers.

“…It is risky and dangerous to buy any electronic device from suspicious outlets. Most are those who buy Stolen items from armed gangsters who have violently robbed innocent Citizens and in the process kill or maim them,” read part of DCI’s tweet.

He warned that in the event that one is found in possession of stolen items, they will face the consequences that should have been faced by the criminal.

Some criminals are known to violently rob and end up killing the victims. In which case if one is found to have bought items acquired through violence and killings they will have to face harsh sentences including death sentences.

He added that Kenyans out to demand receipts indicating particulars and further take a picture of the receipt for it to remain secure.

“Kenyans should be vigilant because even if you innocently purchase stolen items, you will have immensely suffered by the time the police are able to establish that you are not the criminal,” he said.

He urged dealers to mark gadgets bought from them at the counter as this will make it difficult for criminals to sell them and make it a lot easier for investigators to track.
