World Marks Day of the Girl amid Increased Murder Cases of Females in Kenya

It is the 21^st Century, decades from today, talks on empowering the girl child were held in different quarters as the gender was considered weak due to its poor performance academically and in the professional field, men made money and women spent it. This comes to light today, as we mark the Day of the Girl.

Today, Africa has more girls in the classrooms than boys which are also clearly reflected in the various professions. The girl child is strong and is taking lead position in almost all the creative and leadership roles in Africa.

There however is one challenge that poses a threat to the girl child and it is worse than the unavailability of sanitary towels, and that is the boy child who got neglected in the process of empowering the girl.

The African boy child was neither prepared for the extremely empowered girl child neither the competition she posed.

Women empowerment organizations such as Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization have taken a wholesome look at empowering not just women but also their families which include their sons so as to curb a growing menace of meting violence on women.

On their social media platforms, the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization has called upon dialogue and counseling of families when things seem to be heading South instead of violence which in most times results to deaths.

The Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization has been in existence for the last seven decades and has pioneered women empowerment in the grassroots level through family empowering projects and talks.

The Organization plans to soon engage members of the public in-depth family talks in achieving one of its dearest purposes which is strengthening family values while empowering women.

Since the year began, a list of women who have lost their lives in horrifying ways have continued to grow revealing a clear gap in the empowerment of women as most cases later reveal that before the victim died, there was a pattern of violence but they stayed on without seeking help.

Between the 1^st of January 2019 and the 18^th of September 2019, 72 women had been murdered, these including children as young as two years old whose bodies were found dumped by the pedophiles.

Murder cases of women aged 20 years and above mostly involved rejected lovers who could not come into terms when the lady said ‘No’ to having any kind of relationship them.

Other widely occurring murders of women are of those in marriages when their husbands turn against them in fights which mostly results into deaths and in some cases the men end up committing suicide.

The other number of women being murdered is that of female activists who champion for human rights in various levels in the society.

As the Day of the Girl is marked globally, a lot still needs to be done to bring equality and safety for the girl especially the African girl who despite being faced with all these dangers has to struggle to afford a pack of sanitary towels every month of her life.
