The umbrella, boots and coats will be with us once again in this month of November 2019 and the dams are expected to continue overflowing despite the continued water rationing in most parts of the Capital city.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned that Kenyans should not put their guards down as this month of November brings in more rainfall than the last month of October.

Ms. Stella Aura the Meteorological Director noted that the rains would be coming after October’s rain already soaked the ground which could is likely to lead to floods and landslides in various parts of Kenya.

Ms. Aura further explained that the difference in sea temperature commonly known as Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently highly positive at +2.06 which is very favourable for improved rainfall in Kenya.

The MET Director refuted fears that the country was likely to experience an El-Nino noting that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) had remained neutral for some time now.

“Most parts of the country will experience above-average rainfall during the month with November normally being the peak month for the October-November-December (OND) “short-rains” season,” Ms. Aura said.

A number of counties in the country have already been experiencing heavy rainfall which has led to deaths in some which is why Kenyans are advised to keep safe during this month.

“Several parts of the country experienced wet weather conditions during the month of October. The start of the seasonal rains (onset) was timely over several places with some areas especially over the north eastern where onset was slightly earlier than expected,” Ms. Aura noted.

The rains will be accompanied by heavy storms that will affect Homabay, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia Counties.

Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu Counties have been marked as Counties likely to experience flash floods and strong winds which may occur during the month of November.

The amounts of rain expected in the month of November 2019 is predicted as likely to be higher than the long- term average amounts normally received in November of other years.
