Health Workers Yet To Receive Their November Salary A Day To Christmas

BY Juma · December 24, 2019 09:12 am

As Kenyans head into Christmas, county health workers have nothing to smile about and nothing to give to their families.

It has emerged that health workers in almost all the 47 counties have not received their November salaries with some still waiting for October salaries.

“Today is 23rd December 2019 yet County Governments are yet to pay health workers their November salaries when Kenyans have received Dec (December) pay,” said Dr. Ouma Oluga, Secretary General and CEO of Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentist Union (KMPDU).

According to Dr. Oluga, some of the health workers are still waiting for their October salaries.

“And health workers are expected to keep working and celebrate Christmas and new year normally,” he added.

The current constitution placed the health services into the hands of the counties, putting the already ailing sector into what can be described as “coma.”

The health sector in Kenya has been ailing for years. Public hospitals, meant to help the general public are in pathetic conditions with workers having to work long hours with lack of medical equipment.

What is the solution?

All the 47 counties were not ready to handle the health sector. Changes should be made for the sector to go back to the national government.

The national government should take over the handling of salaries for health workers. Their salaries should arrive in time just like other public servants.

How do you expect someone who hasn’t been paid for one month or two to work hard and deliver? Sometimes we blame our health workers but in reality, they are going through frustrations and depression.

The country is currently busy with the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) that has already consumed 10 billion shillings. Now that the mandate of the BBI Taskforce has been extended, more billions are expected to go down the drain.
