Nairobi could be many things, including busy and expensive but it has been ranked the best African city for expatriates to work in.

In the survey done recently, 82 countries were put under study where Nairobi emerged position 45 globally among the best cities entrepreneurs can set up businesses and grow them for the long term.

The survey was conducted by the largest community of expatriates, where 20,000 respondents were interviewed in the city they’d prefer most.

It turned out that most of the expatriates thought Nairobi would be the best choice for them, citing its favorable weather and its friendly people, factors that appeared to be what expatriates considered before making decisions.

Apart from the social bit, the survey also analyzed five crucial areas of expatriate life, including urban areas, work-life balance, and settling, among others.

While South Africa is thought to be a bit more developed compared to Kenya, you would expect that towns like Cape Town and Johannesburg to be ranked higher than Nairobi, when in fact the two were ranked several positions after Nairobi, coming at 65th and 59th respectively.

For Nigeria, Lagos was ranked at position 79, making it one of the bottom ten countries according to expatriates’ views.

“Most expatriates gave Nairobi credit as the best city to work in as they think the weather is friendly and its easier for them to make friends and, therefore, settle in well. Nairobi Beat other common African cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa and Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria to be the 3rd best city globally and first in Africa,” reads the report.

For the second year running, Nairobi is ranked the best city by expatriates, as they view it as one of Africa’s economic giants.

The last survey by Africa Financial Market Index 2019 showed that Nairobi was still the third most attractive market for investment after Mauritius and South Africa, scoring 65 percent.
