KRA Officers Are Visiting Offices And “Collecting Data” In Mombasa

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) seems determined to collect every last coin from taxpayers even if it includes “visiting” them at their place of work.

Earlier during the month, KRA announced that it would be sending letters to taxpayers informing them of balances and pending penalties before moving them to the new iTax system.

In Mombasa, officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) are doing it differently. They are moving from one office to another “collecting data.”

Among those that the officials from KRA are set to pay a visit to Mombasa are businesses, offices, and landlords.

“Kenya Revenue Authority, Domestic Tax Department is carrying out Block Management Systems (BMS), an exercise of visiting Taxpayers, LANDLORDS, and BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS at their business premises for collection of details pertaining to their businesses,” stated part of the introduction letter from KRA.

According to the letter from KRA, the details and information being collected is for “comparison and updating their details in our system. Currently this week, we are carrying out the exercise in Mombasa Island.

Kenya Revenue Authority has been under pressure from the Treasury over its failure to hit revenue targets leading to the government “resorting to borrowing” to meet budgetary demands.
