Most parts of Nairobi experienced a heavy overnight rainfall that started on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at around 12:00 am.

The heavy rainfall was also experienced in other parts across the country and according to Kenya Meteorological Department, the rainfall in at least 13 counties is expected to continue to April 13, 2020.

The counties that will experience the rain during this period are Nairobi, Narok, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Tharaka, Kitui, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Tana River, Garissa, Mombasa, and Kwale.

The rains come at a time most parts of the country are continuing with the planting season although Kenya Met has not specified whether the rain will be enough to support the growing of crops.

Kenyans are currently battling a locust invasion that has so far destroyed vegetation in more than 30 counties with experts warning of a second wave that will be 20 times more than what was witnessed earlier.

Most counties in the Rift Valley and Western Parts of the country have been witnessing rain and some farmers in Bungoma County have already planted their seeds. Harvests for this season are likely to be better than last season because the rainfall came on time but concerns are being raised over the advent of the locusts.

Some large-scale maize farmers have threatened to abandon the farming of the crop saying the government has been exploiting them with poor maize prices. Some farmers are still holding on thousands of bags of maize of the previous harvest.

To add insult to an injury, Agriculture CS Peter Munya announced plans of the government to import maize into the country saying that the government had no plans of buying maize from local farmers.

“It shall come a time where we shall only be planting maize for our food. The government has failed us,” said one farmer from Rift Valley.
