Police officers have confirmed the arrest of 39 Somali women who were making merry at a wedding party in Eastlands area, Nairobi on Sunday, April 19, 2020, despite the ban of social gatherings by the Government.

The 39 women had converged at a wedding ceremony in Nasra Estate on Sunday morning and the party was still at its peak at the time the police officers arrived at the scene.

The police said they made the arrests after getting tipped off from the members of the public and all the 39 women were put under mandatory quarantine at their own expenses.

These arrests still mean that some Kenyans have not come into reality with the disease despite the numbers rising on a daily basis.

In the past weekend alone, about 147 Kenyans were arrested in bars and social places defying social-distancing rules put in place by the Government to curb the spread of COVID-19.

However, the Ministry of Health said it has introduced measures to ensure Kenyans adhere to curfew rules during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While giving the COVID-19 briefings on Sunday, April 19, 2020, the Health CAS Mercy Mwagangi warned that anyone who will be found outside during the curfew hours will be arrested and taken to mandatory quarantine.

The CAS said that with the help of technology, the Health Ministry will also be able to monitor those who will be congregating during the curfew hours.

CAS Mwagangi urged the members of the public to be more vigilant and take it as their responsibility to help in containing the spread of the virus.

“It is now the local transmissions that worry us the most, and because we do not know, and cannot know, everyone who is infected, ladies and gentlemen, the function of public health and national security is everyone’s responsibility, “she urged.

It is now clear that cases of the COVID-19 are not imported but are transmitted locally with the ministry stating that few cases are emanating from the original quarantine facilities.

“Our analysis shows that 56 percent of all our confirmed cases were imported, and only 44 percent have been locally transmitted. With the support of Kenyans, we have worked flat out, including taking unpopular measures, to limit the spread of both sets of transmissions. So far, we have succeeded to contain the imports.”

So far, Kenya has 270 cases, with 14 deaths and 76 recoveries.
