Safaricom Gives GoK Ksh 200 Million To Fight Covid-19

Kenya’s giant telecommunications company Safaricom has committed a total of 200 million shillings to help the government of Kenya fight the deadly Coronavirus.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has requested emergency resource mobilization that was set to go towards helping in the fight against Covid-19 that has now hit almost every sector in the country.

“Safaricom through its M-Pesa and Safaricom Foundation is committing 200 million shillings towards providing food and nutrition to Kenyans in need,” said a statement from Safaricom.

According to Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Mr. Peter Ndegwa, the company has put in place measures that will ensure that Kenyans get the services conveniently as they wade through the ongoing pandemic.

“Safaricom is fully committed to supporting Kenya through the evolving situation around the Covid-19 pandemic. We have made business decisions that will enable our customers to access most of our products and services for either at no cost or at a highly subsidized rate,” said Mr. Ndegwa.

Safaricom also has an ongoing program where Kenyans are allowed to redeem their Bonga points to pay for essential services as well as donating the same for those in need. The program is known as Bonga for Good and has seen Kenyans redeeming at least 20 million Bonga points daily.

Globally, as of Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus stood at 2,049,850. The number of confirmed deaths was at 132,835 while the number of recoveries stood at 507,782.

On Wednesday, Kenya registered 9 new cases, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 225. The number of deaths is at 10 while the number of those who have recovered is at 53.

As the world continues the fight against Covid-19, President Donald Trump of the United States of America announced the halting of funds to the World Health Organisation (WHO) blaming it for coverup and downplaying the spread of Covid-19.
