The number of Covid-19 confirmed cases in Kenya has jumped to 1,109 after 80 new cases were reported on Thursday in an announcement by CS for Health Mr. Mutahi Kagwe.

“Today, we have recorded the highest number of Coronavirus cases at 80. Nairobi and Mombasa are still leading in the cases,” said CS Mutahi Kagwe.

The numbers recorded in the last 24 hours are the highest since the announcement of the first confirmed case in March. Cases have been rising on a daily basis. On Wednesday, the number of cases announced was 66.

Of the 80 cases, 41 are from Nairobi while 20 are from Mombasa. According to the Ministry of Health, 9 people have been discharged after recovering from the virus.

“Today, the younger case is six months old. We are, however happy to report that we have discharged 9 patients who have recovered. The number of fatalities remains at 50. This war cannot be won by the government alone but by all individuals following the rules,” said Kagwe.

The Ministry of Health says it has increased the testing capacity and called on all Kenyans to remain alert and follow all the rules stipulated in the fight against Coronavirus. The Ministry, however, still has not come clear on the topic of mass testing and when it will be rolled out to all Kenyans.

On Wednesday, the CS Kagwe ha instructed the closure of malls and restaurants without being specific on the areas the directive was intended. The Ministry later clarified that malls and restaurants were to remain closed in Eastleigh where there is a cessation of movement in and out of the area, as well as Old Town in Mombasa.

Residents of both Eastleigh and Old Town have expressed their displeasure after the extension of the cessation period saying the government has neglected them and that they are not receiving any essential services.
