Fever is a major symptom of COVID-19 which is why most public places have resulted in buying the gun thermometers to check the temperature of those seeking to access their establishments but can you imagine the consequence of a faulty thermometer?

Well, a faulty thermometer would send one to quarantine really fast which is why the Kenya Bureau of Standards is advising Kenyans to be sure they are using legit thermometer guns to avoid unnecessary panic.

The thermal gun or infrared thermometer is currently the standard device used across Kenya to test people for fever which is a major symptom of Covid-19, with the thermometer being most prefered thanks to its ability to detect one’s temperatures without necessarily having to be placed on their skin.

The standard procedure of action for people manned entrance points in Kenya currently is to immediately inform the ministry of Health which in turns sends an ambulance with a team of medics in an ambulance and officials from the Ministry.

The accepted body temperature of a healthy person ranges between 36.1 degrees to 37.2 degrees with the body raising its temperatures only when fighting infections as noted on COVID-19 cases where a patients develops very high temperatures.

For a thermometer to function perfectly, it needs to be calibrated at the right time according to the director of metrology and testing at the Kenya Bureau of Standards Dr Henry Rotich who says it is possible for the gadget to deviate from accurate measurements and could be misleading.

“This allows the user to maintain accurate, reliable, and consistent results when making temperature measurements,” Dr Henry Rotich says reinforcing Kebs calls for all gun thermometer users to ensure they are calibrated regularly.

“By law, we’re the custodians of primary measurements and standards, and we are the ones who calibrate all equipment,” Dr Henry Rotich says adding that when a thermal gun is not calibrated at the right time of use, it can give skewed readings.

Calibration, a process of verifying that the readings of an instrument match that of a standard enable a device that is not within a specified measurement to be adjusted so that it can be within the bounds of the specification.
