Teachers employed by Boards of Management (BOM) will be paid 10,000 shillings per month for five months to December to cushion them against the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The BOM teachers have gone without pay since March when schools were ordered shut down to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The Board of Management teachers might not be compensated for the previous months they have gone without pay since March when the first case of the virus was confirmed in the country.

On Tuesday, 25th August, Education CAS Zack Kinuthia raised concern on how school heads were submitting an exaggerated list of staff as well as adding tutors that had not been registered by the Teacher Service Commission (TSC)

Despite releasing the funds, PS Richard Belio Kipsang stated that the money would only be channeled to teachers after data issued by school heads verified.

“Each teacher must sign for the money personally and records must be kept for later auditing,” said Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang in a circular to regional coordinators of education and county directors of education.

The payment is part of the 15.4 billion shillings released to public schools to enable them to prepare for reopening in January. The money will only be paid to teachers who worked at the schools as ta March 15th.

Initially, Kinuthia had indicated that the money was delayed due to unverified data form school heads. The government had initially indicated that the money for the teachers who have gone for close to five months without pay would be released by the end of July.

The Ministry of Education also released funds for free secondary education at a capitation rate of 5,151 shillings per student.

PS Kipsang directed the funds to be used to maintain and improve school infrastructure, pay non-teaching staff, and cover administration costs.
