The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) warned on Thursday that the novel coronavirus is driving discrimination towards vulnerable communities in different countries including migrants and foreigners.

The humanitarian agency said it surveyed several people in different countries and found out, half blamed a specific group for spreading the coronavirus, with many mentioning Chinese people, immigrants, and foreigners.

“It is particularly concerning that both national migrant and foreign workers are blamed for the spread of COVID-19 as they are quite vulnerable already,” Dr. Viviane Fluck, one of the lead researchers and the agency’s Asia Pacific community engagement and accountability coordinator said

More than half of the world’s population surveyed blamed foreigners and rule-breakers for spreading the virus to their countries. The groups most often thought to be responsible were people from China and other foreigners that have returned from China.

The searchers said that people find it even harder to freely associate with COVID-19 recovered patients and that they still treat them extraordinarily according to surveys made despite having recovered from the virus.

Researchers also reveal that some hospitals are also discriminative while handling the COVID-19 patients, reports of COVID-19 patients complaining about continued negligence of health workers during treatment is another form of discrimination.

The IFRC also warned that the discrimination arising amongst people will be even worse when all countries open their economies for businesses to resume with free movement of foreigners and out and out of different countries.

Current News On Vaccines

China’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that COVID-19 vaccines being developed in the country may be ready for usage by the general public as early as November this year.

In an interview with the state TV on Monday, China’s CDC chief biosafety expert Guizhen Wu said Phase 3 clinical trials were proceeding smoothly and the vaccines could be ready for the general public in November or December.

According to the CDC, China has four COVID-19 vaccines in the final stage of clinical trials. At least three of those have already been offered to essential workers under an emergency use program launched in July.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also said that over 8,000 Boeing 747s will be needed to ship a COVID-19 vaccine around the World in case it’s fully ready for distribution and that this will be the “largest transport challenge ever.
