You Will Be Fined Ksh 20,000 For Not Wearing A Mask

Imagine failing to buy a mask worth 10 shillings, venture into the streets, meet with the police, and fined 20,000 shillings? It sounds unfair. But why would you fail to wear a mask anyway? Just wear your masks.

The Inspector-General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai has warned Kenyans that they will be fined 20,000 shillings if found in public without a mask.

“Being in public without a mask attracts a fine of Ksh 20,000. However, all officers are to enforce this within the law and no one is allowed to use excessive force while implementing this directive,” he said through his official Twitter handle.

According to Mr. Mutyambai, the police are under strict instructions to enforce all the Covid-19 guidelines as stipulated by the Ministry of Health. This is ironic because the same police are providing security to massive political gatherings.

The directive by Mutyambai is likely to see a rise in bribes among his boys. Why would someone pay 20,000 shillings to the government when he or she can pay 1,000 shillings to the “arresting officer”? But only time will tell now that thousands are walking without masks.

There has been an instant increase in covid-19 cases in Kenya since President Uhuru Kenyatta “opened up the economy”. In the past seven days, more than 100 Kenyans have lost their lives to Covid-19 with a daily number of more than 10 deaths.

The country has also been registering more than 1000 cases daily as the Ministry of Health warning of a more dangerous second wave of Covid-19 as compared to the first one. Sadly, Kenyans seem to have thrown caution out of the window.

Politicians led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, his “brother” Raila Odinga, and Deputy President William Ruto have been holding political rallies, bringing together thousands of people with the potential to spread Covid-19.

Has the Ministry of Health given up on COVID-19?
