A Kenyan businessman, Joseph Mboya Muithe, is being sought by the Burundi Authority after he escaped from their custody.

Mboya who was arrested on 21st April for drug trafficking is said to have escaped on Friday night in Rumonge hospital where he had been taken for treatment by the Deputy Head of the Murembwe prison Hospital after exhibiting cholera like-Symptoms, according to a Burundian news outlet, Ishami TV.

According to the Burundi Authority, the escape was a calculated move planned by both the FDD rebels fighting the Burundian government and a top police boss at the station.

The two police officers who had been guarding Mboya have been arrested and are in custody over the same.

Joseph Mboya Muithe is a Kenyan citizen from Rangwe Constituency in Homabay County. He had moved to Burundi for business activities in the region.

In 2019 he launched a pharmaceuticals company which was officiated by the then-president late Jean Pierre Nkurunziza.

His arrest this year followed claims that he and his associates were using the pharmaceutical company to import drugs exceeding the allowed amount in the East African Border.

The chemical substance transported includes pethidine which has a great effect on people’s health.

Furthermore, the minister of health in Burundi is alleged to have been aware of the illegal business operations involving Mboya.

The arrest of a Turkish national who was believed to be trafficking narcotics at Bujumbura airport on march 20th 2021 is apparently what sparked the pursuit of Mboya.

Before he left for Burundi, Mboya had expressed interest in running for the Rangwe Parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election in Kenya.

Joseph Mboya is the grandchild of the late Hezekiah Oyugi, who worked closely in the administration of the late President Daniel Arap Moi.
