DStv viewers should look forward to the 13th round of the 2021 MotoGP World Championship, the Aragon Grand Prix, live from Ciudad del Motor de Aragon in Alcaniz, Spain this Saturday and Sunday. SuperSport is definitely your #HomeOfSport and the ultimate destination for motorsport fans.
The previous round at Silverstone in England saw Riders’ Championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) take a major step towards his first MotoGP world title with a dominant victory, opening up a commanding 65 point lead over nearest chaser Joan Mir (Suzuki Ecstar).
The Frenchman has recorded five victories, a further three podiums, and has finished all but one race in the top seven – he has been a model of consistency and deservedly leads the way in the title race.
The 22-year-old, however, insists he is not thinking any further than the next race in Aragon: “I’m not really focused on the championship,” Quartararo explained. “But when you look, you start [the British GP] with a 47-point lead and you go to 65, of course, it’s the most important one.
Mir, the 2020 champion, believes that the title race is over and he is only competing with the likes of Johann Zarco (Pramac Ducati) and Francesco Bagnaia (Lenovo Ducati) for the runner-up spot.
“Yes,” said the Spaniard when asked if he thought his Championship hopes were over. “It’s not done until the chequered flag, this is clear. But yeah, I’m disappointed about [the last race].”
Zarco, meanwhile, believes he has put “too much pressure” on himself in the title battle and needs both himself and his Ducati to get back to peak performance.
The Aragon GP has traditionally been dominated by Marc Marquez (who has a record five wins in the MotoGP category), though it was Alex Rins on a Suzuki who claimed victory in 2020, making it nine straight wins for Spanish riders at this event.
