The new law amends the Political Parties Act of 2011 by introducing the concept of coalition political parties, outlining functions of political parties as well as changing the criteria of accessing the Political Parties Fund.

President Kenyatta appended his signature on the political parties amendment bill on Thursday 27th January 2022.

Senior government officials present were Dr. Joseph Kinyua, State House Deputy Chief of Staff Njee Muturi, and parliament Clerks Jeremiah Nyegenye (Senate) and Michael Sialai (National Assembly).

The new law amends the Political Parties Act of 2011 by introducing the concept of coalition political parties, outlining functions of political parties as well as changing the criteria of accessing the Political Parties Fund.

This comes after a moment of political intolerance in the National assembly, where members of parliament exchanged harshly while debating the amendment bill after which it sailed through.

Upon being presented to the Senate for further scrutiny, it sailed through again. The law gives powers to the Registrar of Political Parties to certify political party membership lists and nomination rules among other transformative provisions aimed at strengthening management of political parties and enhancing democracy.
