The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a two months closure of a section of the Eastern Bypass to pave way for bridge construction. This is due to the expansion of the Eastern Bypass into a dual carriageway at a cost of 12.2 billion.

In a public notice on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, the road agency stated that the closure will take place from March 3 to May 3, 2022

‘’KURA wishes to notify the public that a section of the Eastern Bypass at the Kangundo Road junction overpass will be closed for bridge construction from March 3, 2022, to May 3, 2022,’’ reads the notice.

Kura said that motorists heading to Embakasi will be diverted to the slip road below the overpass, urging motorists and pedestrians to strictly adhere to traffic signs and the traffic marshals on site.

‘’ We request the public to be patient as we work to improve road safety and enhance urban mobility,’’ reads the notice.

The road starts at City Cabanas along Mombasa Road, linking motorists through Ruai towards Ruiru, passing over Thika Road to Ruaka, where it joins the Northern bypass.

The road was initially constructed as a single carriageway. According to Transport Secretary James Macharia, the project includes the construction of five major vehicular crossings involving bridges and expanding busy sections of the road as well as installation of other amenities like street lights. He added that the construction works have so far commenced and the project is now at 30 percent completion.

The CS disclosed that the project has so far employed 660 youths to speed up the construction, to ease traffic congestion which has been the major problem along the road, which has been relied upon by many people as a link to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
