KEY TAKEAWAYS

The CS especially gave a stern warning to the middle-class families, who he stated are prone to taking their children to schools other than the one they were assigned for.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has directed school principals not to affect any form one transfer request.

According to the CS, transfers will only be authorized under special circumstances, such as when a student has a medical condition. Otherwise, all students should report to the schools they were placed.

This comes amidst reports of low form one turnouts in various schools, with speculations going around that parents are keeping students at home in the hope of transferring them to other schools later on.

Magoha has asked all parents to stop anticipating something that will never happen.

“Stop keeping the children home because you think they will be taken to another school because that will never happen”, Stated Magoha.

The CS especially gave a stern warning to the middle-class families, who he stated are prone to taking their children to schools other than the one they were assigned for.

He went ahead to give them an option that if they were not happy with the schools assigned, then they should take their children to private schools and pay for school fees rather than destabilizing the efficient government system.

Moreover, Magoha said that despite the institutions to which the Class 8 leavers are called, all schools across the country are equally funded. Parents should, therefore, have nothing to worry about in terms of their children getting the best education.

He likewise urged well-wishers to sponsor students who may not have the means to pursue secondary education while urging less fortunate parents to send their children to school regardless of whether they have school fees.

The reporting period, which began on 4th May 2022, is ongoing in different schools, with over 1.2 million learners expected to join secondary schools following the completion of their 2021 KCPE exams in early March.
