John Ngumi Appointed As The New Safaricom Board Chairman

Safaricom has announced the appointment of John Ngumi as the new director and Chairman of the body effective August 1, 2022. Ngumi will replace Michael Joseph who was appointed as the Safaricom Board chair in August 2020.

Ngumi is the former chairman of Kenya Pipeline Company and Konza Technopolis Development Authority. He also served as director of the Communication Authority of Kenya and has led in other sectors including manufacturing, aviation, energy, and infrastructure.

In the banking sector, Ngumi started his career at National  Westminister Bank, he has worked with several leading global banks including Stanbic bank, Citibank, and Barclays. He also co-founded the Loita Capital partners Group- one of Africa’s locally owned investment banks.

He was also part of 2001, 4 billion shillings Safaricom infrastructure bond that helped the telco finance its infrastructure rollout.

He holds a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from st Peter’s College, Oxford University, and the United Kingdom. He believes that robust and efficient financial services are a key driver to freeing Africa from economic hopelessness.

The exiting Michael joseph served as Safaricom’s founder and first CEO from 2000 to 2010. He was appointed the CEO again in 2019 following the death of Bob Collymore, where he served till March 2020. He is currently the chairman of  Kenya Airways, since 2016. He is also chairman of the M-Pesa foundation and the M-Pesa foundation academy.

He also served as Vodafone’s director of Mobile Money with a role of leading the strategic growth and development of successful M-PESA proposition across the Vodafone footprint. He has played a major role in the growth Of M-Pesa and its related services.

He has received several accreditations including CEO of the year awarded by the Kenya Institute of Management, and the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (awards given by the President of Kenya to those who have made a positive impact in Kenya).

He is also a keen conservationist and serves as Chairman of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a leading conservancy in Northern Kenya.
