KEY TAKEAWAYS

Though the MPs and the Senators are entitled to the send-off packages, the outgoing Clerk of the National Assembly, Michael Sialai also insisted that the lawmakers are not eligible to receive gratitude.

The MPS have however defended the send-off packages saying they deserve it due to the nature of their work.

Kenya’s lawmakers, drawn from both the Senate and the National Assembly awarded themselves a hefty send-off package of up to 7.8 million shillings each for those who have served for more than one term.

The package also involves 5.8 million shillings for each of the first-timers.

“Members who have served for one term will be entitled to 5.8 million shillings from the scheme while those who have done more than one (term) will get their pension,” reads part of the Parliamentary Pensions Scheme report.

The National Assembly consists of 349 members both elected and nominated. Kenyans sent home 211 members of the National Assembly and the Senate at the August 9th polls.

In the National Assembly, 146 legislators who represented single-member constituencies were sent packing while 34 of the 47 Woman Representatives were shown the door. Voters also dismissed 31 Senators out of the 47 elected lawmakers.

The lawmakers have vetoed these demands to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), a government body mandated to authorize such undertaking.

They have debated the package increment since August 5, 2020, when they wanted SRC to award them 11.6 million shillings each.

SRC had, however, argued that the reward would make it fiscally unviable for the taxpayers to service their needs, making the pension scheme a liability.

“This shall, therefore, make the public pension liability unaffordable and fiscally unsustainable,” read the response by SRC.

In February, the MPs had proposed 11.7 billion shillings for a sendoff package, including free cars and extra millions for the mortgage and medical insurance payments. They petitioned the treasury to allocate 373 million shillings to cater for medical bills of MPS who will fail to win back their seat at the General Elections.

Meanwhile, the outgoing governors in the just concluded elections will earn more than 1.3 billion shillings from the taxpayers as a sendoff package.
