HELB Releases Funds To University And TVET Students

On Wednesday, the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB  started the disbursement of loans to continuing University students and TVET Institutions.

In a statement issued by HELB Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera, the upkeep loans for the more than 175,000 undergraduate and over 70,000 TVET continuing students under the Old Higher Education Funding Model [OFM] are currently being disbursed.

“Higher Learning Institutions (HLIS) – Universities and Colleges are advised to allow students to register as tuition fees to various institutions have also been released and should be reflected in the respective bank accounts of the HLIS by October 5, 2023,” Ringera said.

According to HELB, the funds are expected to reflect from October 5th with the government urging universities and colleges to register students for learning.

HELB CEO added that the deadline for first years applying for the loan is October 7, after which their funds will start reflecting.

“For first-time students applying for funding under the New Higher Education Funding Model (NFM), for both loans and scholarships, the deadline for application is October 7 2023 as per the extension granted by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on September 5, 2023.”

In early September, thousands of university freshmen and TVET students were yet to get State funding to pay for their tuition and upkeep following cash flow challenges at the HELB. HELB said it required Sh10 billion from the Treasury to process loan applications for university and college students.
