No, Google Is Not Shutting Down Gmail For Good

There is a post that has been doing rounds on X that Google will be sunsetting Gmail, setting panic among hundreds of millions of Gmail users around the world. The post is fake and Gmail has clarified that “Gmail is here to stay.”

“We are reaching out to share an important update about Gmail. After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close,” said the viral post.

“As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service. As of this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” the post continued.

Gmail has over 1.8 billion active users and getting rid of that many email accounts would be tremendously disruptive to the world economy, something Google would not dare do. (Source: Gizmodo)

But in another development that many might have missed, Starting in April this year, senders of unwanted mass emails to Gmail users will begin to see message rejections increasing unless they abide by new Gmail email sender guidelines.

Google has also confirmed that, from April, it will “start rejecting a percentage of non-compliant email traffic, and we’ll gradually increase the rejection rate.” Google says that, for example, if 75% of the traffic meets the new email sender authentication guidelines, then “a percentage” of the remaining non-compliant 25% will be rejected.
