New Salaries For Teachers As TSC Implements Second Phase Of CBA

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has now fully implemented the second phase of the Competency-Based Curriculum, CBA.

The teachers’ salaries have been adjusted upwards. The highest-paid teacher now receives a salary of 157,656 shillings monthly. This is a Chief Principal at Grade D5.

Senior Principals at grade receive a monthly pay of Sh121,890 while, Principals at grade D3 now receive a monthly perk of Sh104,644.

Similarly, Deputy Principals II T-Scale 12 (D2) receive a monthly pay of Sh91,041. Meanwhile, their counterparts, Deputy Principals III T-Scale 11 (D1), receive a monthly pay of between Sh77,840 and Sh85,269.

Teachers in the grade of Senior Masters IV, Scale 9 (C4), receive a monthly pay of Sh52,308. They also get a monthly Commuter allowance (up to Sh8,000), Annual Leave Allowance (up to Sh6,000), and monthly House Allowance (up to Sh28,000).

Implementation of the final phase of the CBA has seen teachers move to new, higher, salary scales. Below is the new salaries implementation matrix.

The full implementation of the 2021–25 CBA, the promotion of 130,000 stagnated teachers, the allocation of 15 billion shillings for teachers’ medical cover, and the release of teachers’ payments for July 2024 were among their demands.

Teachers also want TSC to remit all loans and NSSF deductions to the statutory bodies, saying the commission has, since June 2024, deducted the monies but failed to remit them to third-party agents including banks.

TSC promised to review the career progression guidelines, urging teachers to be patient as the process was still ongoing. Additionally, the commission announced that teachers can now access both public and private hospitals under the Teachers Medical Scheme.

According to Nancy Macharia, TSC has promoted 51,232 teachers under competitive promotions and a further 20,000  to be promoted annually on the common cadre.

Macharia added that the government has provided resources for the retooling of teachers for the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). TSC revealed that the teachers’ unions took note of its position and agreed to consult their internal organs to withdraw the strike notice.

“We, therefore, wish to thank the unions for engaging the Commission to ensure non-disruption of learning in schools during the Third Term, 2024,” TSC noted in a statement.
