Kenya Met Issues Nationwide Weather Advisory, Predicts More Rain Across The Following Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released its latest weather forecast, warning citizens across the country to brace for increased rainfall over the next seven days.

According to the statement issued by the department, most parts of Kenya are expected to experience significant rainfall, with some areas likely to witness isolated heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and shifting weather patterns throughout the day and night.

In its forecast, the department emphasized that the Highlands both West and East of the Rift Valley, regions that include major urban centers such as Nairobi, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, Southeastern Lowlands, and parts of Northeastern Kenya, will be most affected.

The rainfall is part of the ongoing long rains that typically occur between March and May, and the department is urging residents to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas.

In the western part of the country, covering counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok, a combination of morning rains, sunny intervals, and intense afternoon thunderstorms is expected.

“Morning rains will be experienced in a few areas, but by late morning, the skies are likely to clear briefly, allowing for sunny intervals. However, by afternoon, widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop, affecting several places.

Light to moderate showers may also occur during the night, occasionally spreading to wider areas,” the forecast detailed.

These weather patterns are expected to impact both urban and rural livelihoods, particularly in agricultural zones where the rains may benefit crops but also pose risks such as flooding or landslides in highland areas.

Further north, in the Turkana and Samburu counties, the department predicts a similar weather pattern with morning rains giving way to scattered afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms continuing into the night.

These regions, which often experience arid to semi-arid conditions, are expected to receive welcome precipitation. However, the Met Department warns of the possibility of flash floods, particularly in dry riverbeds and low-lying areas.

In Central Kenya, including the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi, as well as the capital city Nairobi, the mornings are forecast to be generally cloudy with light rains in isolated areas.

“Afternoon and night showers accompanied by thunderstorms are likely to occur in a few areas, and occasionally these may spread to several other places,” stated the Met Department.

Urban dwellers, particularly in Nairobi, are advised to plan their commutes with these conditions in mind, as sudden downpours may lead to traffic disruptions and localized flooding.

Counties in the Northeastern region, namely Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are also expected to experience morning rainfall in some areas. The weather is forecast to evolve into afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms over a few places.

The department highlighted that while rainfall levels may not be as intense as in other parts of the country, communities in these regions should still prepare for weather-related disruptions.

In the Southeastern Lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as the inland areas of Tana River County, residents should expect cloudy mornings with light showers.

These will likely be followed by sunny intervals before the return of rainfall and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon and night.

These regions, often associated with transitional rainfall patterns, will benefit from the moisture, especially in farming zones. Nevertheless, residents are urged to remain alert to any weather advisories or flood alerts issued during the week.

The Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with the coastal areas of Tana River County, are not exempt from the rainfall. The department forecasts morning, afternoon, and night showers in a few places along the coast.

Although coastal regions are accustomed to frequent rainfall, especially during the long rain season, the Met Department urges residents to be cautious, particularly in low-lying areas where drainage may be poor and localized flooding can occur rapidly.

The Kenya Meteorological Department is advising the public, relevant authorities, and disaster preparedness agencies to remain on high alert throughout the week.

Communities in landslide-prone areas are especially urged to take caution, while farmers are encouraged to take advantage of the rains while being mindful of crop diseases associated with high humidity and excessive moisture.
