Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Embakasi East And Other Parts Of Nairobi

Residents of Embakasi East and various other constituencies within Nairobi should prepare for heavy rainfall in the coming days, according to the latest advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The weather alert, released on Monday afternoon, outlines several areas in the capital that are set to experience varying levels of rainfall from Monday, March 9, through Tuesday, March 10, 2025.

According to the weather forecast, Embakasi East is one of the hardest-hit areas, with the department predicting rainfall amounts ranging from 80mm to 100mm during the specified period.

This amount of rainfall is expected to cause significant disruption in the region, which is known for its vast residential estates, commercial hubs, and bustling urban activities. The local population is urged to take precautionary measures to prevent flooding and other rain-related issues that might arise as a result of the intense downpours.

Apart from Embakasi East, other areas in Nairobi will experience moderate rainfall, albeit to varying degrees. Constituencies such as Dagoretti, Roysambu, Kamukunji, and Embakasi North are forecast to receive between 40mm and 60mm of rain.

Although these regions won’t experience the extreme rainfall amounts seen in Embakasi East, the downpours are still expected to cause localized flooding and waterlogging, which could disrupt daily activities and pose risks to both pedestrians and motorists.

In some of the lighter rainfall zones, areas within the Kasarani constituency and Ruaraka are predicted to receive relatively light showers, with rainfall amounts below 20mm.

These areas, which are predominantly residential and include significant parts of Nairobi’s industrial and commercial sectors, will likely face minimal disruption, though occasional showers may still impact traffic flow and outdoor activities.

Starehe constituency, which encompasses central areas such as Pangani, Ngara, Ziwani, Shauri Moyo, Kariokor, and the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), will experience moderate rainfall amounts of between 25mm and 30mm.

The expected downpours could cause some disruption, particularly in densely populated zones, where drainage systems may struggle to handle the volume of rain. The CBD, being a busy commercial and administrative hub, is likely to face challenges with road congestion and waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas.

In Kamukunji, which includes neighborhoods such as Eastleigh, Pumwani, parts of Gikomba, and Muthurwa, residents should expect fairly light rainfall, with the forecast predicting a total of more than 35mm of rain.

While this isn’t classified as heavy rainfall, it could still lead to significant water accumulation in certain parts of the constituency, especially around informal settlements, where drainage infrastructure is often inadequate. Light showers are also expected in Makadara constituency, which will face similar rainfall patterns to those in Kamukunji.

Westlands, a commercial and residential area in the western part of Nairobi, is expected to experience above-average rainfall, with totals forecast to range from 50mm to 60mm.

Given the area’s high population density and traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, the heavy downpours are likely to cause significant disruptions to movement, as well as potential waterlogging in both residential and business districts.

The varying intensity of rainfall across different parts of the city highlights the challenge of preparing for a wide array of conditions in Nairobi. While some areas are expected to receive moderate showers, others, such as Embakasi East, could experience prolonged and heavy downpours.

Residents across the city, particularly in flood-prone zones, should remain vigilant and take necessary steps to minimize the risks associated with the rain, such as ensuring that drainage systems around their homes are clear and functioning properly.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has also issued a timely advisory, emphasizing the elevated risks of accidents as the rainy season takes hold in Nairobi. The NTSA has highlighted the dangers of reduced visibility on the roads during heavy rains, urging all motorists to remain extra cautious when driving.

The department has reminded drivers that rainy conditions can drastically affect the clarity of the road, and visibility may be further compromised due to mist and waterlogged surfaces.

Additionally, the NTSA has advised motorists not to attempt to cross flooded roads, especially in areas where water is running swiftly. It can be difficult to accurately assess the depth of water pooling on the roads, and attempting to drive through it could lead to vehicles being swept away, potentially resulting in fatal accidents.

The authority has called for increased awareness among road users to avoid taking unnecessary risks that could endanger their lives and those of others on the road.

With this being a season of unpredictable weather patterns, the Kenya Meteorological Department has also recommended that people living in areas prone to flooding or landslides pay particular attention to their environment and take precautions where necessary.

Residents are advised to keep updated on the latest weather reports and warnings to avoid being caught off guard by sudden changes in weather conditions.
