The Fuliza Magic That Powers Kenya’s Kadogo Economy

BY Juma · May 16, 2025 11:05 am

Remember when Fuliza came into being? Everyone was talking about it. The lowly, the high, and the mighty. They all discussed it. Even pastors in churches, whenever the congregation behaved in a manner that showed that they did not have money to pay for their offering, a Paybill number was provided, and they were told to use Fuliza.

And so, Fuliza became a household name. Memes were made about it, and songs were almost being composed about it, if not already. Remember when people would Fuliza cash to another number that did not have Fuliza so that they could withdraw it as cash at an M-Pesa agent? Some good days and memories of Fuliza.

Designed for financial continuity, Fuliza provides an instant overdraft facility for M-Pesa users in Kenya. With an average of over 3.5 million transactions processed daily, enough to construct close to 3,000 standard classrooms or 460 dispensaries worth 5 million shillings each, Fuliza has disbursed more than 22.4 billion dollars, ensuring uninterrupted access to funds for individuals and small businesses.

Whether covering urgent bills, restocking inventory, or handling unexpected expenses, Fuliza’s accessibility and reliability make it an indispensable financial lifeline, particularly for underserved communities and SMEs striving for growth.

I know you know about Fuliza, but here are some of the key things that you need to know. You never know; you might find yourself in a situation where Fuliza is your only savior. Swahili say, “Kuna. siku Fuliza itakutoa kwa Shimo.”

How to opt in: To use Fuliza, you need to be a registered M-PESA customer with an active Safaricom line. Dial *234# and select Fuliza to opt in.

How it works: When you try to make a transaction and your M-PESA balance is insufficient, you’ll be prompted to use Fuliza. If you choose to use Fuliza, the transaction will go through, and you’ll be given a Fuliza limit to cover the transaction.

Repayment: The Fuliza amount, along with any associated fees, will be automatically deducted from your M-PESA account when you top up your balance.

Checking your Fuliza details: You can check your Fuliza limit, balance, mini statement, and opt-out option by dialing *234# and selecting Fuliza.

Eligibility: M-PESA customers registered using their national ID/Kenyan passport/Military ID can activate Fuliza, but not all are eligible for a loan limit upon activation. M-PESA accounts registered using foreign passports cannot successfully opt into Fuliza.

Transactions: You can use Fuliza for Lipa Na M-PESA (buying goods and paying bills) and sending money.

Cash withdrawals: Fuliza users can also withdraw money equivalent to their Fuliza limit, minus the normal transaction charges, from M-Pesa agent stores.

When in a fix, just Fuliza it away.
