The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a detailed five-day weather forecast highlighting expected weather patterns across various regions of the country, with a strong warning about significantly colder-than-usual nights, light rainfall, and temperature fluctuations.

The advisory, released on Monday evening, covers the period from Tuesday, July 1, through Saturday, July 6, and urges Kenyans to prepare for varying weather conditions depending on their location.

Residents of Nairobi County and several central highland counties are being cautioned to brace for chilly nights and patchy rain over the coming days. According to the department, nighttime temperatures in Nairobi, as well as in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi, may plunge to lows of 7°C, which is well below the seasonal average.

These cold nights will be accompanied by occasional light rainfall, especially in the late evening and night hours. Daytime weather in these areas is expected to be mostly cloudy with chances of light showers in the morning, followed by intermittent sunny spells from late morning into the early afternoon.

Despite the frosty nights, temperatures during the day will remain moderately warm, reaching highs of around 25°C, especially across the Eastern Highlands of the Rift Valley.

In the western region of the country, including the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the central Rift Valley, residents in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira should expect intermittent rainfall throughout the week.

Morning conditions between Wednesday and Saturday will be characterized by light rains alternating with sunny intervals. However, the afternoons and evenings are likely to bring heavier cloud buildup that may lead to showers and thunderstorms in localized areas.

The Meteorological Department advises residents in these regions to remain vigilant, particularly during the afternoon and night hours when the chances of thunderstorms are highest. Farmers and outdoor workers are especially urged to plan their activities around these weather changes.

The South-Eastern Lowlands, encompassing Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the inland parts of Tana River, will enjoy generally dry conditions with occasional cloud cover. Mornings will start cloudy but will clear by mid-morning to allow for extended periods of sunshine, particularly between Wednesday and Saturday.

Afternoon conditions are expected to remain dry, making the region ideal for outdoor activities. While nights will be partly cloudy, temperatures will stay moderate, with nighttime lows averaging 10°C and daytime highs expected to reach up to 31°C.

These weather conditions provide a favorable environment for residents and farmers in the region, although the Kenya Meteorological Department urges continued monitoring in case of abrupt changes later in the week.

In the coastal strip, including the counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal zones of Tana River, weather patterns will include frequent rainfall, spread across morning, afternoon, and night hours. Despite the recurrent showers, the coastal region will remain warm and humid, with minimum temperatures hovering around 21°C and daytime highs peaking at approximately 31°C.

The Kenya Met notes that the rains may cause localized flooding in low-lying areas and advises residents to be cautious, especially when commuting or traveling near waterways.

The North-Western parts of Kenya, particularly Turkana and Samburu Counties, will continue to experience dry and sunny weather during the day, coupled with partly cloudy nights. However, a slight disruption is forecast on Friday afternoon, when isolated rain showers may occur.

This region will face significant temperature contrasts, with scorching daytime highs of up to 37°C, while nighttime temperatures may drop sharply to around 7°C. The KMD advises residents to dress appropriately for the cooler nights and remain hydrated during the hot days.

Counties in North-Eastern Kenya, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are expected to enjoy long sunny spells throughout the forecast period. Morning hours will be mostly dry, with few clouds and sunshine prevailing throughout the day.

However, the weatherman has warned of a slight chance of isolated showers in the afternoon hours of Wednesday, which could briefly interrupt the otherwise dry conditions. Temperatures in the region are expected to remain high during the day, with mild cooling during the night

The Kenya Met five-day forecast reflects the seasonal weather transition typically seen in July, marked by dry spells in the North and South-East, increased moisture in the West, and significant nighttime cooling in central highland areas.

Residents are advised to dress warmly, especially in Nairobi and other central counties, due to sharp nighttime cold. They are also advised to remain alert to possible flash flooding in western and coastal areas due to localized showers and thunderstorms.

According to Kenya Met, residents should also exercise caution while driving during rainy or foggy conditions and continue monitoring daily updates from the the department for any changes to the forecast.
