Dusit Princess Hotel Actualizes The Tree Of Life

Audiences today are becoming increasingly conscious about what they consume and where it comes from. As the saying goes, “we are what we eat,” and this is being taken into account with every bite. What we consume has a tremendous impact not just on us but on the entire ecosystem as well.

At Dusit Princess Hotel Residences Nairobi, customer experience and service delivery form a key part of its overarching sustainability program christened ‘Tree Of Life.’

Tree of Life is a reminder of the hotel’s responsibility to maintain the balance of nature to sustain the world for subsequent generations. In simpler terms, what is executed today has a profound impact on tomorrow.

Tree of Life includes 31 criteria that are aligned with selected United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals as well as industry-specific targets. These targets are divided into four levels of achievement across more than 290 properties globally, including Dusit Princess Hotel Nairobi, one of the best hotels in Nairobi Westlands.

One of the ways we work towards ensuring the value chain is by maintaining an organic garden on the property. This idyllic space is used to grow herbs such as rosemary, basil, parsley, mint, and lemon grass. These herbs play a critical role in ensuring that Dusit Princess maintains its position as one of the leading hotels in Westlands with international cuisine. They contribute to the farm-to-table movement by providing fresh and local ingredients.

The herbs contain antimicrobials that extend the shelf life of our food and reduce overall food waste. This has been complemented by our NO BIN POLICY, which was introduced by the chef to curb wastage at the staff cafeteria. This initiative encourages staff to serve the exact quantity of food that they are confident of finishing.

The benefits are not just limited to the kitchen. The quality of the soil where the garden is located has improved substantially, thanks to increased organic matter. As a result, there has been no need to introduce artificial chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides. By moving away from these substances, we ensure that the food has zero contamination and that the environment is less polluted.

The other key sustainability initiatives include public area lights being controlled by motion sensors. These timers help in reducing wastage. The hotel has installed solar panels to power its hot water systems and equipped rooms with electromagnetic induction cookers for guests who wish to cook.

Dusit Princess Nairobi has also eliminated plastic water bottles and replaced them with locally sourced glass refillable ones. We have also partnered with Nairobi County in maintaining the aesthetic beauty of Mimosa Lane.

As it strives to remain one of the leading boutique hotels in Westlands, Nairobi, Dusit Princess Nairobi will continue to ensure that our sustainable practices are rooted in protecting our guests, staff, and the environment in which we operate.
