Kenya Met List Regions Set For Heavy Rainfall Over Next Seven Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of increased rainfall activity across several parts of the country in the coming days, with heavy downpours expected to intensify as the week progresses.
In its weekly forecast released on Tuesday, March 17, Kenya Met indicated that moderate rains will be experienced at the beginning of the week across regions including Central Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coastal region.
However, the rains are expected to become heavier and more widespread from Thursday onwards. According to the agency, isolated incidents of heavy rainfall are likely to occur in various parts of the country, raising concerns over possible flooding and disruptions, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
In the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and Western Kenya, counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, and Baringo are expected to receive significant rainfall. A similar weather pattern is forecast for Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok counties, where residents have been advised to remain alert.
Kenya Met further highlights that Central Kenya and nearby regions will also experience notable rainfall. Counties including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, as well as the capital Nairobi, are expected to receive consistent rains accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas.
“In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, morning rains are likely to occur in a few places, while afternoon and night showers, often accompanied by thunderstorms, may spread to several areas,” the department stated.
Coastal regions are not spared either. Counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with areas around the Tana Delta, are expected to experience intermittent showers throughout the day and night, though in fewer places compared to inland regions.
Despite the widespread rains across much of the country, the weatherman noted that northern Kenya will remain largely dry and sunny. Counties in this region, including Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are expected to experience minimal rainfall over the next seven days.
In addition to rainfall patterns, the department also issued a temperature outlook. Daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in parts of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya, indicating hot conditions during the day.
Conversely, cooler nights with temperatures dropping below 10°C are anticipated in some areas of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, parts of the North Rift, and regions near Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kenya Met has urged residents across affected regions to stay updated with daily forecasts and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides, as the rainy season gains momentum.
