Safaricom Widens 5G Coverage to More Counties in Major Digital Boost

Safaricom has accelerated the rollout of its 5G network, extending the high-speed service to more counties across Kenya in a move set to strengthen internet access for businesses, schools, and homes. The expansion targets major towns, fast-growing commercial centres, and areas where demand for data has risen sharply in recent years.

The company says the latest rollout is designed to meet the growing need for faster and more reliable internet as more Kenyans shift their daily activities online.

Unlike 4G, 5G technology offers much faster speeds and lower delay when sending or receiving information. This means websites open almost instantly, video calls are clearer with fewer interruptions, and large files can be downloaded or shared within seconds. For hospitals using digital health systems, banks operating secure online platforms, and offices holding virtual meetings, dependable connectivity is no longer optional, but it is essential.

Safaricom has invested heavily in upgrading its infrastructure to support this expansion. This includes installing new 5G-enabled base stations and enhancing fibre connections to ensure the network can handle increased traffic without slowing down. Customers with 5G-compatible smartphones will automatically connect to the faster network once they are within a covered area.

However, access will depend on both location and device capability. While the coverage map continues to grow, some rural and remote regions may take longer to enjoy full 5G access as installation is being carried out in phases.

The expansion comes at a time when data consumption in Kenya continues to rise steadily. Remote work, online learning, digital banking, and video streaming have pushed internet usage to record levels. Without stronger network capacity, users risk facing slow speeds and unstable connections.

By widening its 5G reach, Safaricom is positioning itself as a key driver of Kenya’s digital growth. Faster connectivity is expected to open doors for innovation, improve communication, support small businesses, and create new economic opportunities.
