The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority, Kenya Met, has issued a fresh weather advisory warning Kenyans to prepare for continued rainfall across several parts of the country until May 25.

According to the latest weekly weather forecast released by Kenya Met on May 18, counties located in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley are among the areas likely to continue receiving sustained rainfall over the coming days.

The affected counties include Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Embu, Meru, Laikipia, and Tharaka-Nithi.

In its advisory, the weather agency noted that the rainfall pattern is expected to persist in these regions, with residents experiencing cloudy mornings followed by afternoon showers and occasional thunderstorms.

Some areas are also likely to record rainfall extending into the evening and nighttime hours as temperatures remain relatively low. “Rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley in the latest forecast,” KMSA stated in part of its update.

The weatherman further indicated that several counties situated in the western side of the Rift Valley will also continue experiencing significant rainfall this week. Among the counties listed are Kericho, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Narok, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Elgeyo Marakwet.

Residents in these areas have been advised to expect a mix of cloudy skies, cool temperatures, and repeated rainfall episodes throughout the week. Kenya Met explained that while some mornings may begin with sunny intervals, rain showers are still likely to occur in isolated places before intensifying later in the day.

“Sunny intervals are expected in the mornings, though rain may occur in a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places,” the agency stated.

The forecast also highlighted the likelihood of temporary sunny breaks during the mornings and afternoons in some parts of the country. However, isolated showers are still expected to develop before weather conditions clear intermittently later in the day.

In Nairobi and its neighboring counties, residents should prepare for cold and cloudy mornings that may occasionally give way to brief sunny periods. Afternoon showers are expected in several areas, while evenings are likely to remain partly cloudy and chilly.

Meanwhile, northwestern counties such as Turkana and West Pokot are projected to experience generally sunny and warm daytime conditions, with partly cloudy nights. Nonetheless, Kenya Met noted that isolated areas could still receive occasional light morning rainfall.

The northeastern region, including Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa counties, is expected to remain largely dry with sunny intervals dominating most parts of the day. However, a few areas could experience brief morning showers before skies gradually clear.

Counties in the southeastern lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, are also expected to experience predominantly sunny weather during the day. Despite the generally dry conditions, isolated afternoon showers may develop in a few locations later in the day.

At the Coast, residents in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River counties should expect warm temperatures accompanied by sunny intervals during the daytime. However, occasional showers are likely to occur mainly during the mornings and nighttime hours.

The latest advisory comes amid ongoing heavy rains that have affected transport, farming activities, and daily routines in several parts of the country over recent weeks.

Authorities are urging residents, especially those living in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and monitor updates from the meteorological department as weather conditions continue to evolve.
