Carrefour Open Padel Tournament Signals Bright Future for Kenya’s Fast-Growing Sport

The Carrefour Open Padel Tournament held in Gigiri from June 4 to 6 was more than just a competition. It was a reflection of how rapidly padel is gaining ground in Kenya and the role partnerships can play in growing emerging sports.

Organized by Carrefour in collaboration with Networks Padel Village, the tournament attracted over 200 players who competed for a prize pool of KSh700,000. Athletes battled across various categories, including Top, Advanced, Mixed, High Intermediate, Intermediate and Open divisions, highlighting the sport’s growing reach among players of different skill levels.

What stood out most was the commitment to youth development. The decision to award the top three youth players a 12-month professional mentorship program shows a willingness to invest in the future rather than focus solely on the competition at hand. For any sport to thrive, young talent must be identified, nurtured and given opportunities to develop.
