Omar Artan’s Ordeal Exposes the Cracks in Football’s Global Showcase

Football is often described as a game that brings the world together. However, the recent experience of Somali referee Omar Artan shows how administrative barriers can sometimes overshadow the spirit of the sport.

Artan, the 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, was denied entry into the United States at Miami International Airport due to immigration procedures, preventing him from taking part in the FIFA Club World Cup. Speaking after the incident, he said one of his biggest dreams had been taken away.

His case is unfortunate not only for him personally but also for African football. Artan has worked hard to establish himself among the continent’s top referees and had earned the opportunity to represent Africa on a major international stage. Missing that chance because of travel and immigration complications is a disappointment that could have been avoided.

The incident has also drawn attention to wider concerns about the organization of the tournament. Former England striker Ian Wright described it as a “World Cup of chaos,” reflecting frustrations over several logistical issues that have emerged during the competition.

“Is this how the hosts behave for the greatest game, the greatest tournament in the world? Are we not hearing more? Are we seeing how Qatar got dragged, are we not hearing more? Is this the spirit of football, really?” said Ian Wright.

No country can be expected to compromise its immigration laws. However, major sporting events require close coordination between governments and organizers to ensure accredited officials, players and support staff can enter the host nation without unnecessary obstacles. When someone officially selected for a tournament is unable to participate, it raises legitimate questions about planning and communication.

As football continues to expand its global reach, inclusivity must extend beyond words and slogans. The game’s governing bodies have a responsibility to ensure that talent and merit, rather than administrative difficulties, determine who gets the opportunity to be part of football’s biggest events.

Omar Artan’s experience should serve as a lesson for future tournaments. The success of any global competition is measured not only by what happens on the field but also by how well it welcomes those chosen to take part.
