Ethiopia Formally Submits to Join NCIP

Ethiopia has submitted its letter to join the Northern Corridor Integration Projects initiative.

The Ethiopian Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the move came as a result of the successful practical projects and political will that has been demonstrated by the member country leaders.

Speaking during the 12th summit held in Kigali Rwanda, the minister said that his country is proud to be associated with NCIP which is an initiative that he believes will transform his country

“As you know we have participated keenly as observers of the past six previous summits but we have decided to graduate, the integration of our region will help integrate and unite our continent.”

He added that his country Ethiopia will fully participate in the ongoing proceedings to meet the intended gaols for the NCIP initiatives.

The minister said that the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn will be attending the next summit that is expected to be hosted in Kampala, Uganda in two months’ time.

President Kenyatta led the Kenyan delegation to the summit which has seen a number of infrastructural projects that are being undertaken by NCIP including the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway.

Speaking during the event on behalf of other leaders, host President Kagame said that the leaders have agreed to emphasize on regular meetings and to maintain good relationships amongst the participants which will ensure the NCIP projects are implemented fully as planned.

Other countries that have shown keen interest towards the NCIP Initiative include The Democtaric Republic of Congo with Their National Coordinator Justin Kamwanya saying that soon Congo will be among the members of the cluster to the single custom territory.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to Rwanda Ambassador Ali Idi Siwa conveyed President John Pombe Magufuli regards saying his country is willing to participate in future events of NCIP.

At the sidelines of the 12th Northern Corridor Integration Projects Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda, ministers of infrastructure of the concerned member States signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on air rescue and search missions in case of air accident in any of the partner states.

In the event the ministers for the member states signed a Memorandum of Understanding on air rescue and search missions in case an accident occurs for any of the partner states. Earlier the missions were done independently by the member countries themselves.

An air service agreement will be made in the next summit that will be held next year in Uganda where member states will sign it to allow Civil Authorities to interact freely and allow an aircraft to land in any of the member states without any hindrance.
