Uncertainty Looms as #CORDdemos set to Resume Today

BY Juma · June 6, 2016 07:06 am

Business people in Nairobi and in some major towns across the country are worried about the operation of their businesses as Coalition for Reforms and Democracy, CORD, resumes their demonstrations today.

By the time of going to the press, most businesses along Moi Avenue in Nairobi were still closed as business people feared the repeat of what happened during one of the demonstrations where their shops were looted and goods stolen.

There were no demonstrations last Monday as the opposition had called them off in what it termed as giving the government time to arrange for dialogue. During the third Monday of the demonstrations, three people were shot dead; two in Siaya County and one in Kisumu and scores others sustained serious injuries.

During that day, demonstrations rocked Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kakamega and Bungoma and for over 12 hours, businesses were on a standstill. The ruling party, Jubilee, through the President and his deputy have maintained that there will be no dialogue concerning Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC, without the due process of following the Constitution.

The opposition on the other hand has insisted that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission must be disbanded before the coming of the next General Election which are expected to be held on August 2017. The opposition has threatened to boycott the next General Elections if the current commissioners will still be in office.

Business people are now calling on law enforcers to protect their businesses from some rowdy youths who are likely to take advantage of the demonstrations to loot and rob from unsuspecting businesses. Already most investors have said that they are keenly following the political temperature in Kenya before deciding to either invest into businesses and projects.

So far, efforts by religious leaders to bring both the opposition and the government at the table of dialogue has terribly failed and now what remains is for nature to take its direction.
